1. Pump design improvement study
This study is being conducted to test a standard pump design available in the market and then to develop a more energy efficient version.
2. Background
TERI has been entrusted a project by Small Industries Development Bank of India (SIDBI) for “Developing Business Development Services in Rajkot Engineering Cluster”. The objective of the project is to strengthen the access to BDS (Business Development Services) of SMEs in the cluster.
3. Overall objectives
To study a typical submersible pump design manufactured in the Rajkot cluster and to suggest improvements in design, material of construction and manufacturing process with the objective of improving its overall efficiency and performance.
4. Scope of work
1. Visit the cluster to get an overall understanding of the typical pumps manufactured there and collect the performance charts of the typical pumps
2. Suggest basic design improvements for a typical model manufactured in the cluster and identify the gaps/deficiencies in material, design and manufacturing processes used
3. Validate the basic design improvement suggestion with the cluster stakeholders through a brainstorming workshop
4. Perform detailing of new/modified design
5. Demonstrate the new design by getting a prototype made and tested for energy efficiency and performance
6. Conduct a design workshop to present the prototype to the cluster highlighting its salient features
7. Provide a comprehensive report giving the deficiency/gaps identified, the new design developed, the prototype made, results of tests conducted on the prototype
5. Expected outcome & deliverables
Final report comprising the study conducted on the existing design, the new design proposed after consultations with the cluster and the final prototype made and tested
6. Competence and expertise requirements
- 10 years+ experience in engineering and design
- Knowledge of pump industry
- Past experience of conducting studies on design/product improvement
- Degree in Engineering (specialization in mechanical preferred)
7. Conduct of the work
- The above mandate will be completed by an individual consultant who will bear sole responsibility for completion of the proposed activities
- The above mandate is to be completed by 15 March 2011
8. Reporting
The consultant will report to Mr. Prosanto Pal, Industrial Energy Efficiency Division, TERI.
